Bioristor is an in-vivo biosensor developed by PlantBit that is inserted directly into the plant's stem to monitor sap ionic concentration and xylem flow in real time. It is based on Organic Electrochemical Transistor (OECT) technology and connects via IoT to provide continuous data on the plant's water status.

The Bioristor differs not only from soil moisture sensors, which measure water in the soil rather than the plant's own response, but also from other monitoring tools currently on the market. By measuring the sap directly from inside the stem, the Bioristor provides a direct physiological signal, detecting water stress up to 48 hours before visible symptoms appear.

PlantBit's technology consists of a data logger unit that collects data from the Bioristor sensors installed on the plant, a cloud platform for data storage and processing, and a web app that lets growers access the information easily and intuitively. A new, cable-free miniaturized data logger is also in development, enabling even greater water savings and crop optimization.

Growers using Bioristor-based precision irrigation have reported water savings of up to 40%, an increase in dry matter of 10 to 20%, a yield increase of more than 10%, and larger fruit size, based on field data collected across multiple crops and growing seasons.

The sensor has been field-tested on a wide range of crops, including kiwi, tomato, grapevine, apple, pear, currant, raspberry, coffee, citrus, potato, and maize, across different growing regions.

Beyond precision irrigation in open fields, the Bioristor is also used in greenhouses and soilless systems (hydroponics and aeroponics). PlantBit is also developing applications for phenotyping and space agriculture, where real-time plant stress monitoring is critical in controlled or resource-constrained environments.

PlantBit can provide guidance for a variety of irrigation systems, including subsurface irrigation, hose-reel (traveling gun) systems, center pivots, precision irrigation, and drip irrigation.

The PlantBit Cloud platform receives data from installed Bioristor sensors, giving growers a real-time dashboard of plant water status to guide irrigation timing.

The PlantBit service includes the rental of the data logger unit, installation training, access to the web app and cloud platform, and customer support, with very fast order fulfillment.
